Julie has always had a fascination with language, art and history. Much of her early calligraphic interest came from her work as a Showcard & Ticketwriter for major retailers in Sydney in the late 1970's, and subsequent teaching of the same vocational course at TAFE during the 1980's.

Following further formal studies in the 1990's for a Diploma in Western Calligraphy and Certificate IV in Teaching of Calligraphy, Julie was awarded Guild level membership of the Australian Society of Calligraphers in 1998 for attaining excellence in the design and craft of calligraphy.

As a calligrapher, artist and craftswoman, Julie has studied various formal fine arts subjects, including printmaking, painting and life drawing. She supports life-long learning by attending workshops whenever possible with noted national artists and international calligraphers such as Denis Brown (Ireland), Jean Larcher (France), Christopher Haanes (Norway), Susan Hufton (UK) and Jan Pickett (UK).
